Sir Edward Grey to Mr. Leech.
Foreign Office, April 3, 1908. (Telegraphic.) P.
I HAVE been informed by the Portuguese Minister that the mob destroyed the Portuguese Catholic Mission at Hainan on the 18th ultimo and that Christians were imprisoned. A cruiser is being dispatched by the Portuguese.
The Portuguese Government are anxious that their representations at Peking should have our support, and you are authorized to give such assistance as you properly can to your Portuguese colleague.
Please furnish me with a report on the matter.
